IELTS preparation and TIPS

by Living in Korea 2022. 8. 3.

I decided to take an IELTS exam.

I was thinking to apply for TEPS or TOEIC exam

because they are much cheaper,

but these 2 exam certificates can be used only in Korea.

TOEFL is also an international certificate,

but I don't like it.

I don't like to take exams on the computer.

So, I stopped on IELTS!

As you might know

there 2 types of IELTS exams:

Academic Training (AT) and General Training (GT)

I registered for the first one.

There is a computer-based exam too,

and you can the results faster, than for the paper-based

but the exam fee is the same.

I prefer the paper-based exam.

IELTS exam fee in Korea is

273,000 KRW

Exam centre

There are several exam centres in Korea, and in Seoul

I chose one that is located in the Gangnam area,

and it is Lexis Language Centre (렉시스어학원)

Exam schedule

You can take exams almost every Saturday.Sometimes, there are exams on Thursdays too. Also, you can choose if you want to take the Speaking part on the same day,or you can do it on another day, usually on Sunday.I don't like to delay exams,I prefer to finish them asap...

IELTS exam structure

The exam itself has 4 parts:

Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
The Speaking exam takes place 1:1 with a native speaker

and lasts about 20 minutes

The entire exam (excluding the Speaking part)

lasts around 3 hours.

The Speaking exam schedule and time will be announced

via email 2 days prior to exam.

IELTS preparation

There are IELTS preparation classes in Korea,

or online.

But I decided to study for the exam by myself.

First, because I am working.

Also, I know the study method that suits me best.

First of all,

I checked a couple of sample tests.

Also,

I listed to

British Council Poadcasts,

if you need, I can share them with you.

Just use that link.

Also,

my friend shared a couple of IELTS books with me,

if you need them, you can take them too.

Collins IELTS, Writing Skills, Grammar and Vocabulary

Also...

I think for the last 2-3 years,

I am using  Grammarly app.

I use it on my PC, on my phone...

It has a free version, but limited,

and there is a paid one too.

I am using the paid one,

because it doesn't just do simple proofreading,

but also suggests better words or phrases,

checks for plagiarism, etc.

The word-choice feature helps to learn more words in English.

I have a couple of days until the exam,

so I need to study hard!

I will share my feedback after it will be over!
